In Early 2019, R&M Essentials was founded with the intention of pressing the finest and freshest of oils for the North American market.
Long-time friends, Rodney Goodchild and Marlow Deiter bemoaned the lack of ‘freshly pressed’ oil available from their local store. Having a European upbringing, both knew of the abundance of local pressing mills.
These mills would produce small batches of oil for immediate sale to their educated customer base, allowing customers to take full advantage of the multiple nutrient and heath benefits that oils can bring.
Knowing that freshly pressed oil is not possible through our current grocery distribution system, Rodney & Marlow worked together to come up with a way to bring the freshest quality product to consumers. With that, R&M Essentials was born, an Okanagan based Oil Mill with a small batch production schedule that supports online and direct sales.
Cold Pressed Oils
We at R&M Essentials only produce oil using the cold press process. Extracting oil through cold pressing involves pressing the seeds or nuts and forcing the oil out. Our ‘Expeller Press’ feeds the seeds and nuts from a hopper into a screw press.
This press grinds and crushes the seeds until the oil is released. Release plates at the end of the press syphon the oil into our collecting tank. Although some heat is generated through friction as the screw breaks down the seeds, it is not enough heat to damage the oil.
Although our cold pressed oils offer a richer flavour, some are not always best to cook with. Please ensure you select the right oil for your application. Some oils do not react well to heat, which is why we extracted them with low-heat techniques in the first place.
If the oil contains mostly unsaturated fat, it's likely to degrade when heated. These unsaturated oils simply break down when used to sauté or stir-fry; they work better if used in cold applications or as a finishing oil (drizzled over the finished dish).
If the oil contains a high level of saturated fat, it can handle the higher temperatures of grilling, frying and sautéing.
RM-Essentials small batch production schedule, supports online and direct sales giving you the consumer the freshest quality possible.
Some oils, with a short shelf life, such as flax are produced bi-weekly to ensure optimum freshness.
